U.S

In the US, thanksgiving was celebrated for first time in winter 1621 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The Wampanoag, a native tribe in the area, helped settlers who have just arrived in Massachusetts to harvest the land and fish in such a way that they were able to avoid starvation. At harvest time they had managed to store enough food to get through the winter so they thanked God and the Wampanoag for teaching them how to farm the land in a memorial service.

During the American Civil War, Thanksgiving became a national celebration finally taking on the tremendous importance it has today during the Roosevelt presidency of 1933-1945.

Canada

The first Thanksgiving celebration in Canada had a very different motive. It was made by the British explorer, Martin Frobisher in the province of Newfoundland. In this case, the reason for the celebration was the success of his expedition to travel from Europe to America by the northwest route. The celebration as we know it today officially originated on January 31, 1957 when the Canadian Parliament proclaimed the 2nd Monday in October as » Thanksgiving day to Almighty God for the abundant harvest with which Canada has been blessed«
